Hills of Tarkeshwar - Save Trees

Hills of Tarkeshwar - Save Trees

ROUTE:

To reach Tarakeshwar from Delhi there are regular bus services to Kotdwar in Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, which during the day leaves after every hour from ISBT Kashmere Gate in Delhi. At night there is a bus which goes directly to Rikhnikhal / Bironkhal. One can get down at Chokhuliakhal in the night bus and then walk down to Tarakeshwar.

To reach Tarakeshwar one can take a train to Kotdwar. There is a direct train which goes from Delhi to Kotdwar (Mussoorie Express leaves Delhi station at 10.45 p.m. and arrives at Kotdwar at 7.20 a.m.).

Several other trains touch Najibabad which is only 25km. from Kotdwar. A few trains have coaches for Kotdwar which are transhipped from Najibabad.

In these coaches one does not have to get down at Najibabad and then take the road route. These coaches are detached from the train at Najibabad and then another engine is attached which takes them to Kotdwar. Buses and share-taxis upto Chokhuliakhal and cabs upto Tarakeshwar can be hired from Kotdwar. Make sure you bargain with the cab drivers in Kotdwar. Walking from Chokhuliakhal to Tarakeshwar can be a pleasant 5 km. trek if you do not have much luggage to carry. It normally takes about one and a half hour to walk this distance. The bus and share taxi fare from Kotdwar to Chokhuliakhal is about Rs.60. A cab hired from Kotdwar can charge between Rs. 1000 to Rs. 1200.

If one would like to travel by road, the route from New Delhi would be via Meerut, Mawana, Mirapur, Ganga Barrage at Vashistha Ghat, Bijnore, Kiratpur, Najibabad, Kotdwar, Dogadda, (after about 2 km. on the road to Pauri turn right towards Lansdowne), Deriakhal (this place is about 5 km. before Lansdowne, turn right from here), Sisaldi, Chundai, Adhariyakhal, Chokhuliakhal (take a left turn), Gundalkhet and then Tarakeshwar.

The distance from Delhi to Tarakeshwar is about 290 km. which normally takes about 7 hours drive in your own car. The road condition is fairly comfortable. From Delhi to Meerut there is a four lane national highway and from Meerut to Kotdwar there is a State highway. Both the roads are well maintained. During the rainy season there can be landslides between Kotdwar and Tarakeshwar. This should not be cause of major concern because with the network of roads that have been constructed in the last few years several alternative routes for evacuation are available.

The nearest airport is Dehradun. It is however not advisable to take the air route to Dehradun because from there it takes another 5 hours drive to Tarakeshwar via Haridwar, Najibabad and Kotdwar.
